Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Confusion’s higher DPS makes it objectively better than Psycho Cut. However, due to its shorter cooldown, many players prefer Psycho Cut.

  • Future Sight is a no-brainer here, being one of the highest DPS moves in the game. It is strictly superior to Psychic.

  • Shadow Ball is useful against Psychic and Ghost-type raid bosses.

  • Focus Blast gives Alakazam some great type coverage over meta relevant Pokemon such as Blissey, Snorlax, and Lapras.

  • Dazzling Gleam has a use vs. Machamp raids, but even then, Alakazam has a better option.

Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Confusion’s high base damage makes it a clear choice on defense.

  • Shadow Ball and Dazzling Gleam are preferred on defense due to their wide coverage and low energy cost.

  • Focus Blast can lay the hurt on Dark-types, but it is easy to dodge and Alakazam may not even get a chance to use it.

  • Both Future Sight and Psychic are poor on defense, requiring a full bar and offering no coverage.

Rating Explanation

Over the generations of GO, Alakazam has transformed from an ace glass cannon to simply “not Mewtwo.” However, Mewtwo alone doesn’t account for Alakazam’s diminishing value. Since Gen 2, Espeon has put pressure on Alakazam in its role as a Psychic-type attacker, being nearly as good but far more common. As of Gen 3, Gardevoir also counters Fighting-types more elegantly than Alakazam, although it prefers to stay away from Poison-types.

While Alakazam is no longer the clear best in its role, it is still a great Pokemon for getting players over the hump of soloing Machamp and Gengar. However, with each wave of EX raids, Alakazam goes further out of style.
