PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Poison Jab and Acid are almost exactly the same; they have the same duration but different DPS and EPS.

  • Hydro Pump is optimal for the raw power and STAB, while Sludge Wave creates a full Poison-type moveset.

  • Blizzard is a solid move, but there are better candidates for Ice-type offense.
  • Acid Spray is a terrible move in raids.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Poison Jab is only slightly better than Acid for the damage; both are usable.

  • Hydro Pump is preferred for the raw power and very early damage window.

  • Sludge Wave and Blizzard don’t have significant advantages over each other.
  • Despite being a 3-bar move, Acid Spray is too weak to be worth using.

PVE Overview

Tentacruel is typically an overlooked Pokemon in the normal games, but in GO, it's a defensive powerhouse, and Niantic’s CEO John Hanke’s favorite. For this very reason, we cannot rate it too low.

… Just kidding, we here at GamePress base our ratings solely on actual performance! Tentacruel is somewhat bulky, but its offensive ability leaves much to be desired. On defense, it’s stuck with either 1-bar charge moves, which are terrible when Tentacruel becomes demotivated, or Acid Spray, which is objectively horrible despite being a 3-bar move. On the bright side, it resists Fighting, which at least slightly annoys Machamp.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Poison Jab+Sludge Wave and Hydro Pump

Poison Jab has 3.00 DPT (Damage Per Turn) and 3.50 EPT (Energy Per Turn), making it an good attack for PVP. Acid, meanwhile, has the same 3.00 DPT, but a meager 2.50 EPT.  Since these are Tentacruel's only two quick moves, Poison Jab should always be used as a rule. This also means that Tentacruel is forced to run a Poison-type quick move, somewhat limiting its versatility. In order to double-down on this limitation, Sludge Wave (110 Power/65 Energy) helps Tentacruel beat down anything weak/neutral to Poison, while Hydro Pump (130 Power/75 Energy) makes for a more expensive yet more powerful nuke with fairly good neutral  coverage to help seal Tentacruel's role as a closer.

Poison Jab+Sludge Wave and Blizzard

Virtually the same as above, but this set trades off the STAB power of Hydro Pump for a non-stab Blizzard (130 Power/75 Energy) in order to trade a tiny bit of neutral power for a different coverage-profile. While a bit less generally useful, it can allow Tentacruel to deal higher damage against other threats in the metagame.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 2/5

Tentacruel is yet another Pokemon whose unique typing, good stat-spread, and workable moveset leave it with the title of "adequate" in the general Great League meta, but also grant it one or two fairly useful advantages. According to PvPoke's simulators, it can easily take Azumarill, one of the best Pokemon in the tier, in every fresh 1x1 matchup save a 0-2 shield scenario, and it also has an adequate matchup VS the oppressively powerful king of the league; Medicham. That is, of course, assuming Medicham is not packing Psychic and Tentacruel has the shield advantage or neither side has shields to spare. Despite these facts, Tentacruel functions best as a finisher, using its powerful but energy-expensive moves to rain damage down on a shield-less opponent.
