PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Razor Leaf is ideal for Victreebel’s role as Water and Rock-type slayer.

  • Solar Beam and Leaf Blade are both stellar charge moves. Solar Beam has higher DPS, but Leaf Blade performs better in practice.

  • Acid can be paired with Sludge Bomb to take on Fairy-types; it’s the best Poison-type moveset in the game.
  • Leaf Tornado and Acid Spray perform poorly in gyms and raids.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Although Razor Leaf does more damage on defense, Acid is more effective against Victreebel’s Fire and Flying-type counters.

  • Sludge Bomb has 2 bars, an early damage window, and is neutral against Victreebel’s counters.

  • Leaf Blade shares many of the advantages of Sludge Bomb, except it has poorer type coverage.

  • Solar Beam will not likely get used due to Victreebel’s frailty.

PVE Overview

Grass-type Pokemon, in general, do well for their ability to damage meta-relevant Vaporeon and choice raid bosses (Omastar, Golem, Lapras, Groudon, Kyogre). Victreebel is one of the more potent Grass-type attackers in the game, sporting stellar DPS, but it’s glassy due to a low Def stat and an ordinary HP stat. For instance, even with the double resistance to Grass attacks, Victreebel is still in Groudon’s Solar Beam KO range. Not only that, Gen 3 introduces Sceptile and Shiftry, both having access to Leaf Blade, further devaluing the frail Victreebel.

On defense, Victreebel has an easily exploitable typing and bad defensive stats to boot.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Razor Leaf + Leaf Blade and Sludge Bomb

This is Victreebel’s best, and really only viable moveset. Razor Leaf is the hardest hitting quick move in the game, but with terrible energy gain (5.5 Damage Per Turn/2 Energy Per Turn). This means that getting off charged moves is difficult, and as such, you’ll likely only be able to fire off Leaf Blade (70 Power/35 Energy). Sludge Bomb (80 Power/50 Energy) can be useful if you get to it, but you do most of your work with Razor Leaf anyway.

Acid + Acid Spray and Leaf Tornado

Acid (3 DPT/2.5 EPT) is Victreebel’s highest energy gain fast move, and it’s still below average. However, it technically does a better job of charging up two incredibly underwhelming moves. Acid Spray (20 Power/50 Energy) has a 100% chance to reduce your opponent’s defense by 2 stages, even through shields. Leaf Tornado (45 Power/40 Energy) has a 50% chance to reduce your opponent’s attack by 1 stage. None of the moves in this set are good, and neither is the set itself, but it can be worth using if you just want to mess around.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 3 / 5

Victreebel is a glass cannon, with the highest fast move DPS in the game. However, glass cannons aren’t exactly known for their PvP performance. However, Razor Leaf allows Victreebel to absolutely tear through some common water types such as Azumarill, Whiscash, and Quagsire, even taking down Swampert in 5.5 seconds according to PvPoke.com. However, it does lose hard to anything that can hit it for super effective damage, or resist Razor Leaf.

Ultra League: 2 / 5

In Ultra, Victreebel is a little bit weaker than in Great. Its attack-weighted stat distribution puts it at less of a disadvantage than it does in Great League, but its competition gets tougher, and the top threats handle it better.

Master League: 0 / 5

Victreebel’s low CP cap prevents it from being competitive in Master League.
