PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Counter is Machamp’s optimal fast move.

  • Karate Chop’s lower power but higher energy gain keep it competitive when paired with Dynamic Punch.

  • Dynamic Punch is the superior Fighting-type charge move by a sizable margin.

  • Close Combat is viable, but if you need the extra DPS, roll for Dynamic Punch.

  • Cross Chop and Submission are basically inferior versions of Dynamic Punch.

  • Bullet PunchStone Edge, and Heavy Slam are almost never ideal on an offensive Machamp.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Bullet Punch and Counter are similar on defense, as Machamp’s counters often resist Counter.

  • Dynamic Punch and Heavy Slam end up doing similar damage to most of Machamp’s counters.

  • Cross Chop, though weak, has 2 bars and a fast damage window that is hard to dodge.

  • Stone Edge can catch Flying-types off-guard, but its 1 bar doesn’t work with Machamp's fragility.

  • Close Combat is poor because of its 1 bar, while Submission is both weak and easy to dodge.

PVE Overview

In the beginnings of Pokemon GO, Machamp was made toothless with an unfavorable base stat conversion formula and the horrific quality of Fighting-type moves. Subsequent changes to game mechanics have transformed it into a hulking offensive powerhouse. Machamp remains the best Fighting-type Pokemon currently available, and the Fighting type has an important role in the metagame. Gen 3 introduced several other good Fighting-types, but Machamp is still the champ.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Counter + Cross Chop* and Rock Slide

Cross Chop (50 power, 35 energy) is a fighting-type clone of Dragon Claw and Aqua Tail, two incredibly powerful moves. Counter (4 DPT, 3.5 EPT) is one of the best fast moves in the game. Combine the two and you’ve got a high-damage, high shield pressure monster. Add Rock Slide in to handle flying-type Pokémon and it’s very, very difficult to wall Machamp. That said, Cross Chop is very legacy, so if you don’t have one, if you really want to use Machamp, you can potentially use….

Counter + Dynamic Punch and Rock Slide

Dynamic Punch certainly isn’t isn’t a bad move, with 90 power for 50 energy. This puts it on par with Wild Charge, Grass Knot, and Power Whip. But you do lose a huge amount of power relative to Cross Chop, and Machamp drops a tier or two in viability this way.

Heavy Slam and Bullet Punch aren't terrible moves, necessarily, but they're not worth running on Machamp. Close Combat is pretty much just bad.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 3 / 5

Machamp isn’t necessarily bad in Great League. In fact, it’s pretty powerful. The issue is that it’s overshadowed by Power-Up Punch Medicham, who can fill a similar role with much more bulk. If you’ve got the dust to use Medicham, try that instead.

Ultra League: 4 / 5

In Ultra, Machamp once again loses its niche to Power-Up Punch users such as Lucario. Despite this fact, Machamp’s raw power and ability to deal incredible damage without needing to boost up makes it a valuable addition to any team.

Master League: 5 / 5

Machamp fills an incredibly important role in Master League, functioning as one of the top counters to Dialga. It doesn’t hurt that it’s an all around incredibly strong Pokémon, and one many trainers already have at high level. But, seriously, try to have one with Cross Chop. In the absence of the legacy option, use Lucario instead.
